About

After an initial career as a school music teacher in Manitoba, life took me on a wonderful journey to Toronto, Boston, and Phoenix. I am now back in Toronto, where I work in the Music and Culture program at University of Toronto Scarborough and the Curriculum and Pedagogy program at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education (OISE).

Against the grain of academia, which emphasizes narrow specialization, I pursue a range of interests related to music, the arts, education, and community engagement. Common to all of them is a concern for the well-being of individuals and society. In recent years I have used leisure as a concept, ideal, and lens to critique and inspire human welfare in the face of growing inequality.

When not working, I like to spend time with my family. I also like to keep active (when possible). I used to play the saxophone, but these days I find myself learning Irish/Scottish tunes on the flute and tin whistle.

P.S. I’ll worry about fancy websites when I retire. The basics will have to suffice for now.
